25 Years of Resort Magazine
(Please note, a PDF newsletter version of this page is available here).
At Resort Marketing Ltd we celebraed the 25th annual edition of our popular tourist magazine ‘Resort’ with the publication of Resort 2016 Dorset.
The magazine was founded in 1992 to support the tourist industry when there was little information available for Weymouth and Portland’s visitors.
At that time, Brian Cooper and his family owned the Deep Sea Adventure – a tourist attraction on Weymouth’s harbourside that attracted around 80,000 visitors in 1992. Marketing became a vital tool for the business, and it was this need to provide comprehensive visitor information that led to the first Resort magazine.
The magazine has evolved over the past quarter of a century and today it encompasses the whole of Dorset, with three further editions established to cover Cornwall, southern Devon and Hampshire. We have had the pleasure of dealing with our valued clients year after year, some of whom have been with us since the very beginning.
Based in Weymouth and now owned by two generations of the Cooper family, ably supported by a talented team, Resort magazine is as popular with tourists today as it was in those early days. As soon as January arrives callers are ringing to ask when it will be available!
Free to pick up, 200,000 copies of the Dorset edition of Resort are distributed throughout the county from Easter to September.
Not prone to standing still, we also developed sophisticated mobile-responsive websites (see Resort Dorset) which in turn drive mobile apps, helping to direct new customers to advertisers’ doors.
How does a family work together without arguing? Having our office space spread over three floors helps!
Good distribution is one of the key elements in Resort’s success and we’re lucky enough to have our very own “Distribution Dave” heading up operations.

We deliver to over 1,200 venues in Dorset
Dave has been with us since the beginning and if it wasn’t for the fact that he is always on the move around Dorset we may just think he is part of the furniture!
Co-ordinating distribution of our titles across 4 counties, he ensures that over 1,200 venues in Dorset alone are kept topped up with our latest titles.
Just About Dorset
Our latest publishing project is ‘Just About Dorset’, a high-quality monthly lifestyle and events magazine which is causing quite a stir in the marketplace.
Aimed primarily at local residents and free to pick up, 10,000 copies of the magazine are distributed in the first two weeks of each month via more than 200 venues in the south and west Dorset areas.
Editorial is written in-house by Kelly and Annette, with feature contributors sharing their expert knowledge in a wide range of subjects that include travel, gardening, recipes, wildlife and shipwrecks.
Since the first edition was published in June 2015, ‘Just About Dorset’ has proved very popular with our readers and also with the growing number of advertisers who want to reach local people in a style that represents their businesses but doesn’t break the bank. And talking of banks, Polly is our Accounts Manager who, along with all the other tasks she undertakes, will arrange monthly direct debit payments to allow clients to spread the cost of their advertisements.

Creative with Technology
Magazines rely on good design to communicate effectively with readers. With combined experience of over 25 years, Stuart and Harriet make up the creative department, and between them look after all the in-house requirements of the company and those of a valued client base too.
Keeping up with technology has been key to the company’s success, and that’s why our flagship Resort magazines are available in print, online and as mobile apps.

Our mobile apps have been downloaded over 350,000 times
Clients range from successful local businesses such as King’s Hotels, Mallams Restaurant and Freshwater Beach Holiday Park to well-known national brands including Electrolux, Merlin Entertainments, Haven, and Covent Garden.
The way consumers absorb information is changing at a fast pace. Traditional print, mobile responsive websites, mobile apps, social and email marketing are all a part of the mix. We’re in the results business, and we help clients choose the right approach to reach their target audience.
If you’re reading this, ask yourself why? We’d like to think either the design has worked its magic or the editorial has drawn you in. Did we mention we offer copywriting too?
What else do we do? A little taste...
We’re very proud to be heavily involved in the organisation of the multi-award-winning Pommery Dorset Seafood Festival and take responsibility for the branding and marketing.
As well as poster and leaflet advertising, the Resort design studio also developed the mobile-responsive website and iPhone App. The Resort sales team also deal with the arrangements that see approximately 100 stands attending the Festival.
Feeling the winter blues? Make sure the Pommery Dorset Seafood Festival is in your diary – taking place on 9th & 10th July 2016 in Weymouth – and get that ‘warm and fuzzy feeling’ brought on by sunshine, seafood and champagne! www.dorsetseafood.co.uk
